If it took 24 man hours to cut one brick and it took 10 men 17
minutes to move the brick, and Temple I took 150,000 bricks
to build, how many man hours did it take? How many people
would have to live in the area if it took 50 years? (Remember
not everyone in the city is a construction worker.)
To protect Nakbe and El Mirador from looters, Dr. Hansen has
to hire ten guards year-round at $140 each per month. If
auction houses and dealers sell for example, 2500 pre-
Columbian artifacts per year at an average price of $70,000,
how many sites could be protected by applying a 5% tax to
each artifact sold?
The outside facade of Nakbe's Temple I is built with 700 lbs of
limestone blocks. James Woods has found an ancient quarry
and figured out how to cut these blocks out of the same stone
tools the Maya might have used. Now, he has to figure out how
the Maya transported these blocks 700 yards away and 150
feet high to build the temple. James has tried tying these
blocks onto two logs with vine and getting 10 workmen to
transport it on their shoulders. But this is just one idea. Can
you think of a better way to haul these blocks using only
human labor and available materials. Remember, the Maya
used neither the wheel nor beasts of burden. (James will read
your answers and use the best ideas next year when he tries
to haul seven more blocks up Temple I).
